Shipping Korean Orders to APO, FPO and DPO Addresses

Shipping & Costs

Service members stationed anywhere, and especially those who have spent time in Korea, are among the most motivated Korean shoppers. Military mail addresses work differently from ordinary US addresses in ways that both help and constrain a Korean order.

How military addresses are treated

APO, FPO and DPO addresses are handled as domestic US destinations by the postal system, with the military postal service carrying the mail beyond the entry point. Only the postal service reaches them; commercial express carriers cannot deliver to a military address directly and must hand off. Postage is charged at domestic rates to the gateway, which makes military addresses cheaper than commercial international delivery for the equivalent weight.

Customs still applies

A customs declaration form is required on every parcel to a military address, and the same import restrictions apply. The address being treated as domestic for postage does not exempt the contents from prohibited and restricted item rules. The declaration must also list contents accurately, and vague descriptions are a common reason for parcels to be delayed at the military mail facility.

Size, weight and restriction limits

Military mail imposes its own limits, generally a maximum weight per parcel and dimension caps tighter than commercial freight, plus destination-specific prohibitions that vary by installation. Some locations restrict items that are unremarkable elsewhere, so check the destination-specific list before ordering. Aerosols, batteries and liquids face the same restrictions as any other air shipment, plus whatever the destination installation adds on top.

Timing expectations

Delivery to a military address adds a leg beyond the ordinary international transit, commonly a further one to three weeks depending on location. Plan any time-sensitive order such as a holiday gift with a month of margin rather than a week. Tracking also frequently stops updating once a parcel enters the military mail system, which is normal rather than a sign the package is lost.

Frequently asked

Can a forwarding service ship to an APO address?

Only via postal service, since commercial carriers cannot deliver to military addresses. Confirm the service offers a postal option.

Do I still fill out a customs form?

Yes. Every parcel to a military address requires a customs declaration regardless of origin.

Are there items banned to specific bases?

Yes, restrictions vary by destination and can include items permitted elsewhere. Check the current list for the specific APO or FPO.
