What gets counted and by whom
The two systems fans watch track sales reported by participating Korean retailers. A sale is generally counted when a Korean retailer records it, which is why buying from a Korean store rather than a US reseller matters. A copy resold second-hand in the US was already counted once, at the original Korean purchase, and does not count again.
Timing is the part people get wrong
First-week totals are the number that gets quoted, and the counting week has a hard cutoff. Pre-orders are generally attributed to the release week, but a purchase placed after the cutoff lands in the following period. If your goal is first-week impact, order during pre-order rather than waiting for a restock two weeks later.
How bulk buyers structure orders
Group organizers usually place one large order at a single retailer to hit free domestic shipping thresholds and to keep the inclusion allocation consistent. A hundred albums is roughly 40 kg and will not travel home cheaply, so most bulk orders are split: inclusions shipped abroad, album bodies donated, sold locally in Korea, or recycled.
Cost per counted copy
At 20,000 KRW plus a small handling fee, a counted copy costs about 15 to 16 USD if it never leaves Korea. The same copy shipped to the US costs closer to 24 to 28 USD once weight is added. Fans focused purely on chart contribution get roughly 40 percent more copies per dollar by not shipping the album bodies home.

Do digital or streaming purchases count the same way?
No. Physical album charts and streaming charts are separate systems with separate rules. A physical purchase does not affect streaming counts and vice versa.
Does buying from a global storefront count?
It depends on whether that storefront reports to the Korean tracking systems. Domestic Korean retailers are the safe choice if counting is your priority.
Can I have the albums opened and only ship the cards?
Yes, unsealing and card-only shipping is a common request. Expect a per-album handling fee and note that unsealed albums lose most of their resale value.
