Chuseok is Korea's autumn harvest holiday and the single biggest annual disruption to outbound shipping. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, so it moves between mid-September and early October each year. Orders placed in the wrong ten-day window can sit untouched for over a week.
What actually closes
The official holiday is three days, but domestic courier networks effectively stop for four to six days because drivers travel home, and warehouses run skeleton staff. Online stores keep taking orders throughout and simply do not dispatch them. International carriers continue operating but receive nothing to fly, so the queue builds up on the ground.
The real delay length
Expect four to six days of no movement during the holiday itself, then a backlog of three to five more days as couriers clear the accumulated volume. A package that would normally leave Korea in two days can take ten to twelve during this period. The week after the holiday is worse than the holiday week for outbound speed.
Order timing that avoids it
Place domestic orders so they arrive at a warehouse at least five business days before the holiday begins, and aim to have your international leg dispatched before the last working day. If you miss that, the cheaper move is deliberately waiting until a week after the holiday rather than paying for expedited service into a jammed network.
The gift-set complication
Chuseok is the largest gift-giving season in Korea, and the courier network is carrying enormous volumes of food gift sets in the two weeks before the holiday. Delivery slots tighten and domestic transit slows even before the closure begins. Popular items also sell out, particularly food gift boxes and premium fruit sets.

Should I pay for express shipping around Chuseok?
