The upgrade prompt at dispatch is the last decision in a shipment and the one people make with the least information. The honest answer is that it buys two to four days, costs 30 to 60 percent more, and does nothing at all in several common situations.
What you are actually buying
Expedited air service compresses the airport-to-airport and hub-processing portion of the journey. On a Korea to US route that typically means three to four days instead of five to seven. It does not affect the time your goods spend at the Korean store, at the warehouse before dispatch, or in the final domestic delivery leg.
The cost, proportionally
On a 4 kg box, standard air might be 42 to 52 USD and expedited 60 to 80. You are paying roughly 20 to 30 USD for two to four days. Framed as a daily rate, that is 7 to 10 dollars per day saved, which is an easy decision when a deadline is real and an obviously bad one when it is not.
When the upgrade buys nothing
During a Korean holiday backlog, when the delay is on the ground before your box ever reaches the carrier. When customs selects the shipment for examination, which adds days regardless of service level. And when the recipient is not going to be home anyway, which converts a fast delivery into a held package at a depot.
Where it is genuinely worth it
Perishable-adjacent goods in summer heat, high-value shipments where reduced handling time reduces risk, and any hard deadline where arriving late means the purchase was pointless. For a birthday or event gift with under two weeks of margin, the upgrade is cheap insurance rather than an indulgence. It is also worth it on the last shipment before a Korean holiday, where clearing the network before it closes saves a week rather than three days. That is the single highest-value use of the upgrade all year.

Does expedited service clear customs faster?
Not inherently, though express carriers handle brokerage in-house which tends to be faster than postal channels. Selection for examination is independent of what you paid.
Can I upgrade after the box has shipped?
Generally no. The service level is set when the shipment is booked and changing it mid-transit is rarely possible.
Is the tracking better on expedited services?
Usually the same as standard express from the same carrier. Postal versus commercial is the meaningful tracking difference, not economy versus expedited.
