Buying from Korea for someone else adds problems that buying for yourself does not have: you cannot inspect the item, the recipient may need to be surprised, and a customs charge arriving at their door ruins the whole thing. Each of those is solvable if handled at order time.
Ship to them or ship to you
Shipping directly to the recipient saves four to eight days and a domestic reshipping cost of 10 to 20 USD. Shipping to yourself first lets you inspect, wrap and control the delivery date. For a surprise with a fixed date, shipping to yourself with two weeks of margin is the safer choice, because you cannot control when an international package lands.
Keeping the price invisible
The commercial invoice on an international shipment states a declared value and is attached to the outside of the box. That value must be accurate, so it cannot simply be omitted. If price secrecy matters, ship to yourself and reship domestically without the international paperwork attached. Removing the paperwork also removes the customs notice that sometimes arrives separately by mail, which is the other way a recipient learns what something cost.
Duty at the recipient's door
The worst gift outcome is the recipient being asked for money on delivery. Prepaying duties at dispatch means the shipment arrives with nothing owed. If prepayment is not available for your route, shipping to yourself and paying any charges before reshipping achieves the same result. The charge, when it comes, typically lands somewhere between 5 and 20 percent of the declared value depending on the goods, which is enough to be awkward.
Getting the details right without asking
Sizing and preferences are the usual trap. For apparel, Korean sizing runs small and asking indirectly is worth the small loss of surprise. For beauty products, shade matching without asking is close to hopeless, which is why gift sets, tools and skincare are safer gift categories than makeup. Asking someone close to them rather than the recipient is the usual workaround and is worth the extra message. A gift receipt is not something you can provide across an international shipment.

Can I include a gift message?
A note can be enclosed in the package, and many stores offer gift wrapping at purchase. Delicate wrapping should be boxed with padding rather than shipped as the outer layer.
Does marking a package as a gift avoid duty?
