Ordering Custom Hanbok From Korea: Measurements and Timelines

Fashion & Sneakers

Ready-made hanbok exists and fits approximately. Custom hanbok, which is what most Korean families order for weddings and major occasions, is made from a measurement sheet and takes weeks. Ordering one from abroad is entirely possible if you handle the measurement step correctly.

The measurements a maker needs

For women's hanbok: bust, waist, hip, shoulder width, arm length, and total length from shoulder to floor accounting for the shoes you will wear. For men's: chest, waist, shoulder, arm length, jacket length and trouser length. Makers want these in centimeters, taken over light clothing, by someone else rather than yourself. Makers also ask for your height and, for women's hanbok, the desired skirt length relative to the floor, which changes the whole silhouette.

Price tiers and what drives them

Rental-grade synthetic fabric hanbok runs 150,000-300,000 KRW. Mid-tier custom in blended fabric sits at 400,000-900,000 KRW. Traditional silk custom work from an established atelier starts around 1,200,000 KRW and goes considerably higher. Fabric is the dominant cost, not labor. Rental-grade fabric photographs beautifully and wears poorly, so if the hanbok is for repeated use the mid tier is a substantially better purchase.

Timeline and fitting

Custom construction takes three to six weeks after measurements are confirmed, longer near wedding season and major holidays. Korean customers get a fitting; you will not. Reputable makers compensate by building in adjustment allowance at the waist and sleeve, but the shoulder is fixed. Sending clear photographs of yourself standing straight, front and side, helps a maker sanity-check measurements that look inconsistent on paper.

Shipping a finished hanbok

A women's set with skirt, jacket and underskirt runs 1.5-2.5 kg and needs to ship folded with tissue in a box large enough to avoid hard creases. Silk creases permanently under compression, so this is not a vacuum-bag candidate. Accessories such as the norigae ornament, hairpieces and shoes are usually priced separately and add both cost and a surprising amount of volume.

Frequently asked

Can I order without a fitting?

Yes, and most overseas orders work this way. Accurate measurements taken by another person are the critical input.

How far ahead should I order for an event?

Ten to twelve weeks, which covers construction, shipping and any adjustment locally.

Is modern hanbok easier to fit?

Yes. Modernized daily hanbok uses standard sizing and is far more forgiving, at 80,000-200,000 KRW per piece.
