Rates quoted for shipping from Korea to the United States almost always mean the lower 48 states. Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Guam and the other territories are priced and routed differently, and buyers in those places routinely find that the estimate they were given does not apply to them.
Why the cost differs
Express carriers apply a surcharge for non-contiguous destinations, commonly 10 to 30 percent above the mainland rate depending on carrier and weight band. Some economy services simply do not serve certain territories, leaving only the more expensive express options. Postal routing is often the cheapest path but the slowest. Postal services apply the same rates to all US destinations, which makes them relatively more attractive for these addresses than they are for the mainland.
Transit times
Hawaii and Guam are geographically closer to Korea than the mainland but are usually routed through a mainland or regional hub, which adds one to three days rather than saving time. Alaska outside the main urban areas can add three to seven days on the final leg. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands add customs and routing steps that commonly add two to four days.
The consolidation argument is stronger here
Because the surcharge is often applied per shipment as well as per kilogram, splitting into multiple boxes is more punishing for these destinations than for the mainland. If you ship to Hawaii or Alaska, consolidating aggressively into fewer, larger boxes recovers more than it would for a mainland address. For a buyer in Honolulu or Anchorage, two shipments a year at 8 kg each will usually cost less than four at 4 kg, which is a sharper difference than a mainland buyer would see.
Address and system quirks
Some Korean store checkout systems and carrier interfaces treat these destinations inconsistently, occasionally rejecting a valid address or applying a wrong rate. Getting a quote for your specific destination before committing, rather than relying on a general US figure, avoids the unpleasant surprise at dispatch. Getting the quote in writing before dispatch also protects you against a rate correction after the fact, which is the more common version of this problem.

Would shipping to a mainland address and forwarding be cheaper?
Sometimes, particularly for heavy shipments where the international surcharge is large. It adds a week and a domestic shipping cost, so run both numbers.
