The Korean Cash Receipt Field at Checkout

How It Works

Near the end of a Korean checkout sits a section asking about a cash receipt, with fields for a phone number or business number. It looks important, nothing on the page explains it in English, and it stops people who assume it is required.

What a cash receipt is

It is a tax document. Korea encourages traceable transactions by letting individuals deduct documented spending against income tax and letting businesses claim expenses. Issuing a cash receipt registers the purchase against a Korean tax identity, which is why the field asks for a phone or business registration number. The deduction rate for individuals is meaningful in Korea, which is why Korean shoppers reflexively enter their number on every purchase.

Personal versus business issuance

Personal issuance ties the receipt to a phone number registered with the tax authority and produces a personal income deduction. Business issuance uses the company registration number and supports an expense claim. Both are meaningless outside the Korean tax system. Business issuance also requires the buyer to hold a Korean business registration, which is a separate identifier from a personal one.

Why you can skip it

It is optional on every checkout that offers it, and declining changes nothing about your order, price or delivery. There is no discount attached and no consumer protection benefit. Select the no-issuance option and continue. Some checkouts default to issuance with a phone field pre-focused, which is what makes it look mandatory rather than optional. Nothing later in the process asks for it again, so the decision is genuinely final and harmless.

Where it matters for a service order

A Korean buying service may issue receipts against its own business registration for accounting purposes. That is their bookkeeping, not something that appears on your invoice or affects what you pay. It also has no bearing on warranty or on your ability to raise a dispute, both of which rest on the order record itself. You will never see the cash receipt itself, and it has no bearing on your own tax position.
