Children's Day in Korea and Buying Kids' Goods in May

How It Works

May 5 is a public holiday in Korea devoted to children, and it drives a retail cycle comparable to a small Christmas. For families buying Korean character goods, educational toys or kids' clothing, the surrounding weeks are simultaneously the best selection and the worst shipping window of the spring.

What the holiday drives commercially

Character goods, educational toys and kids' apparel see limited releases and heavy promotion through April. Korean character licenses that are enormous domestically but nearly unavailable in the US are the main reason to buy from Korea at all in this category. Expect discounts of 15 to 35 percent in the two weeks before the date.

What is genuinely better from Korea

Korean-language early learning materials, domestic character plush and stationery, and kids' clothing in the 30,000 to 80,000 KRW range where construction quality is noticeably better than equivalent US fast fashion. Korean kids' sizing is by height in centimeters rather than age, which is more accurate but requires measuring. Korean stationery and character goods aimed at children are also far cheaper than the licensed equivalents sold in the US, often a third of the price for the same category of item.

The shipping window problem

May 5 sits inside a cluster of Korean holidays that frequently creates a four-day weekend, and domestic couriers slow for two to three days around it. Orders placed in the last week of April routinely sit until after the holiday. To receive goods in the US for a US occasion, order by mid-April.

Safety and import notes

Toys with small parts carry Korean-language warnings rather than US ones, which matters if you are reselling rather than buying for your own family. Battery-powered toys need the cells removed or declared correctly for air shipping, and anything with a built-in lithium pack has stricter handling rules. Products intended for resale in the US face additional testing and labeling requirements that Korean domestic packaging does not satisfy, which is a compliance question rather than a shipping one.

Frequently asked

Is Korean kids' sizing hard to convert?

It is stated in centimeters of height, so measuring the child and matching the number is more reliable than any age chart. A 110 label means roughly 110 cm tall.

Are Korean toys sold with English instructions?

Usually not for domestic-market goods. Character toys need no instructions, but educational products are genuinely Korean-language products.

Should I buy for a US birthday in May?

Order in early April. Ordering in late April puts your package into the holiday cluster and pushes delivery into the second half of May.
