Korean holiday gift sets are an enormous commercial category, with department stores devoting entire floors to them for weeks. For overseas buyers the frustration is that the most desirable sets are exactly the ones that cannot be imported into the US, and finding that out at the border is expensive.
What the sets contain
Premium fruit boxes, beef sets, dried seafood, ginseng products, cooking oil and condiment assortments, canned goods, and traditional confectionery. Prices span 30,000 KRW for a basic assortment to well over 500,000 KRW for premium beef or fruit. The packaging is elaborate and part of the point. Mid-range sets in the 50,000 to 120,000 KRW band are the most commonly given, and department store sets carry a presentation premium of roughly 30 percent over the same goods bought at a supermarket.
What the US will not admit
Fresh fruit, fresh and processed meat, and many products containing meat derivatives are prohibited or heavily restricted for personal import. That eliminates the beef sets, the fruit boxes and a surprising number of processed items with meat-based seasoning. Shelf-stable seafood, tea, ginseng and confectionery are generally far less problematic but still need checking per product.
The better strategy for family in Korea
If the recipient is in Korea, buy the set from a Korean retailer and have it delivered domestically. Department stores deliver holiday sets nationwide within a day or two, packaging included, for a few thousand won. This is faster, cheaper and legal in every direction, and it is what most overseas Korean families do.
Timing the domestic order
Holiday gift set ordering peaks in the ten days before the holiday, and popular sets sell out. Delivery slots also fill, so a set ordered three days before Chuseok may be scheduled to arrive after it. Ordering two to three weeks ahead secures both the item and the delivery date. Delivery date selection is offered by most department stores and is worth using, since arriving two days before the holiday beats arriving on the day itself when nobody is home.

Can I ship a ginseng set to the US?
Processed ginseng products in sealed commercial packaging are generally importable, but quantity and product form matter. Check the specific product rather than the category.
What about kimchi and sauces?
Commercially packaged and shelf-stable versions are commonly shipped, though liquids add weight and leak risk. Refrigerated products are not viable by air freight to a home address.
Is the packaging worth the shipping cost?
Rarely for personal consumption, since you are paying air freight on decorative boxes. Buy the food itself in bulk packaging if you are shipping to yourself.
