Korean Colored Contact Lenses: Why They Are Harder to Import Than You Think

Customs & Rules

Korean colored and circle lenses are hugely popular and widely sold on Korean beauty sites, which leads buyers to assume they are cosmetics. In the US they are not. They are medical devices, and that classification changes everything about importing them.

The device classification

All contact lenses including purely cosmetic non-corrective ones are regulated as medical devices in the US and require a valid prescription for sale. Devices need FDA clearance for the specific product, and most Korean circle lens brands have no US clearance at all. This surprises buyers because Korean beauty sites sell them next to makeup with no prescription step at any point in the checkout.

What that means for a shipment

Unapproved medical devices are subject to refusal at import. Personal-use enforcement is inconsistent, but the legal position is clear and shipments are seized regularly enough that the risk is real rather than theoretical. Services that understand the category generally decline them. Services also decline them because a seized shipment delays the entire consolidated box, not just the lenses, which affects every other item you ordered.

The health reasoning behind the rule

Lens base curve and diameter need to match the individual eye, and circle lenses use larger diameters than standard corrective lenses. Poor fit causes corneal abrasion and hypoxia. The prescription requirement exists because fitting is a clinical decision, not a style one. Korean lens diameters commonly run 14.0 to 14.5 mm against a standard corrective lens at 14.0, and that extra coverage is what causes the oxygen issue.

The realistic alternative

Several Korean and Korean-style lens brands have obtained US clearance and are sold by US retailers with a prescription. The catalog is narrower and prices are higher, but the lenses are legal, fitted and traceable if something goes wrong. Buying from a US-licensed retailer with a valid prescription also means the lens parameters match your eye rather than a generic average.

Frequently asked

Are non-prescription cosmetic lenses treated differently?

No. Plano cosmetic lenses are regulated identically to corrective ones in the US.

What happens if a shipment is caught?

The lenses are refused entry and destroyed. There is no return path and no compensation.

Can I import lens solution instead?

Solutions are a separate and much simpler category, though they are heavy liquids and rarely worth the freight.
