A common panic among new K-beauty buyers is finding a date on the box that appears to be in the past. Korean cosmetics are usually labeled with a manufacture date rather than an expiry, and the two look nearly identical on the packaging.
The two date labels
Korean law requires either a manufacture date or a use-by date. A manufacture date appears next to characters meaning made on, while a use-by date sits next to characters meaning use before. Both print as year, month, day, so 20260315 is 15 March 2026 in either case. The characters are the only thing distinguishing them. Some brands also print a batch code alongside the date, which is only meaningful to the manufacturer and should not be mistaken for either of the two date fields.
Standard shelf life by product type
Unopened, most Korean skincare carries roughly 30-36 months from manufacture. Sunscreen is typically 30 months. Mascara and liquid liner run shorter at around 24 months. Sheet masks are usually 24-36 months and are the category most likely to arrive with a short remaining window on discounted stock. Sheet masks and sunscreen degrade fastest in practice, so those are the two categories where checking the printed date before purchase genuinely matters.
The period after opening symbol
The open jar symbol with a number and the letter M indicates months of use after opening: 6M, 12M, 24M. This runs independently of the printed date and starts when you break the seal. A product with 30 months of unopened life still has only 12 months once opened if marked 12M. For products you use daily this rarely matters, but a 200 ml serum marked 6M used twice a week will expire long before the bottle is empty.
Why sale stock has shorter dates
Deep discounts and 1+1 promotions frequently clear stock with 6-12 months remaining. This is fine for a product you will finish, and bad for a 500 ml toner you will use twice a week. Check the date before buying a large size on promotion. Asking for a date photo on any 1+1 or bulk purchase takes seconds and is the single most useful pre-shipment check available in this category.
