How a Korean Exchange or Refund Actually Processes

How It Works

When something does go wrong inside Korea and a return is possible, the process follows a specific sequence with specific costs. Knowing the sequence tells you what to ask for and what timeline to expect rather than waiting in the dark.

The request step

Returns are initiated in the order detail page, not by messaging the seller, and you select a reason from a fixed list. The reason determines who pays return shipping: change of mind puts it on the buyer at 3,000-6,000 KRW, seller error or defect puts it on the seller. Choosing the reason accurately matters because sellers dispute mismatched claims. Selecting simple change of mind when the item is genuinely defective also weakens your position later, so the reason field is worth reading carefully.

Collection and inspection

A courier collects from the delivery address, usually within one to two business days of the request. The seller then inspects on receipt. Goods must be in original packaging with all inclusions, and opened cosmetics, used underwear and unsealed media are excluded by law from the change-of-mind right. Courier pickup requires someone present at the address, which for a warehouse means coordinating the handover rather than leaving a box outside.

Exchange versus refund timing

An exchange ships the replacement after the returned item is received and inspected, adding roughly a week end to end. A refund is issued after inspection and returns to the original payment method in three to seven business days for cards, faster for account transfers. Exchanges also depend on the replacement being in stock, and where it is not the seller typically converts the request into a refund without asking.

Partial refunds and restocking

Sellers can deduct for missing inclusions, damaged packaging or diminished value from use. Deductions are typically 10-30% and must be explained. Korean sellers document this with photos, so photographing everything before returning protects you. Photographing the item and the packaging before handing it to the courier is the standard protection against a disputed deduction later. Disputing a deduction is possible through the platform, though the seller's photographs usually decide it.
