Korean fashion prices span a huge range and the brand names give an outsider almost no signal about where a label sits. Knowing the tiers keeps you from paying designer prices for online-mall quality or dismissing a good mid-tier brand as expensive.
Online mall tier
Small independent malls selling unbranded or lightly branded goods, often produced in Dongdaemun. Tops run 15,000-35,000 KRW and outerwear 50,000-120,000 KRW. Quality varies wildly between sellers, and free size dominates. This is where the biggest bargains and the biggest disappointments both live.
Mid-tier domestic brands
Established labels with their own stores and numbered sizing. Tops sit at 40,000-90,000 KRW and outerwear at 150,000-350,000 KRW. Fabric composition is disclosed, construction is consistent, and sizes actually correspond between seasons. For most overseas buyers this is the sweet spot.
Contemporary and designer
Korean designer labels stocked by department stores and select shops run 200,000-800,000 KRW for outerwear. Some have international recognition and resale value, and their Korean domestic pricing is often 20-35% below what the same piece costs at a US stockist.
Where importing pays off
The mid-tier and designer bands, because the price gap with US stockists is largest and the shipping cost is a smaller share of a higher-value item. On a 25,000 KRW top, international shipping can exceed the price of the shirt.

Are Dongdaemun-sourced clothes bad quality?
Not inherently. The same factories supply mid-tier brands. The difference is that mall sellers do not do quality control, so consistency is the gamble.
Do Korean designer brands hold resale value?
A handful do internationally. Most are worth buying to wear rather than as an investment.
Is there a Korean equivalent of fast fashion?
Yes, several large chains, but their pricing is close enough to US fast fashion that importing rarely makes sense after shipping.
