Buying Korean Fountain Pen Inks and Writing Instruments

Hobby & Collectibles

Korean stationery is known abroad for cute goods, but there is a parallel enthusiast market for fountain pen inks, glass pens and calligraphy supplies that almost never surfaces in English. Small Korean ink makers produce limited color runs that sell out and never return.

The domestic ink makers

Several Korean workshops produce small-batch fountain pen inks in 30-50 ml bottles priced 12,000-25,000 KRW, often with shimmer or sheen properties. Runs are limited to a few hundred bottles and are announced through Korean social media and a handful of specialty stationery shops rather than large retailers. A handful of these makers have built enough of a following that bottles resell at two to three times issue price within months of a run selling out.

Shop-exclusive and city collections

Independent Korean stationery shops commission exclusive ink colors tied to their location or an anniversary. These are sold only in store or through the shop's own small online site, which usually has no international shipping and no English at all. Pricing on these is usually the same as a regular bottle, so the premium is entirely in the difficulty of obtaining one rather than in the cost.

Shipping liquids safely

Ink is a liquid in a glass bottle, which is the worst combination for air freight. Bottles need individual bagging, cap taping and rigid separation. Total volume also matters, since consumer liquid quantities are fine but a case of twenty bottles starts to look like a commercial consignment. A 50 ml bottle weighs roughly 120-150 g with packaging, so a six-bottle order sits under a kilogram and is economical to ship alongside other goods.

What else the scene sells

Korean-made glass dip pens, brush pens, notebook paper stocks designed for fountain pen use, and pen cases in leather or fabric. Paper is heavy at roughly 500 g per notebook, so choose deliberately rather than buying by the stack. Korean notebook makers produce paper specifically tested for wet inks, which is a genuinely different product from the general stationery sold in the same shops.

Frequently asked

Can ink bottles be shipped by air?

Consumer quantities of non-flammable water-based ink ship normally when properly packed. Confirm packing before dispatch.

Do Korean inks have English names?

Rarely. Colors are named in Korean, so keep the original product URL alongside your notes to avoid confusion.

How do limited runs get announced?

Through the maker's Korean social accounts, usually a few days ahead. Restock alerts on the shop page are the practical way to catch them.
