The Korean graduation calendar
Elementary through high school graduations fall in early to mid February, with university ceremonies in mid to late February. Flowers, particularly wrapped bouquets, are the signature gift, along with cash, pens, watches and small luxury accessories. Photo studios and flower shops around campuses run their busiest week of the year. The ceremony itself is short and followed by family photographs, which is why flowers and something photogenic matter more than a practical gift. Ordering for a Korean graduate from abroad
Flowers and food should be ordered domestically inside Korea for same-day or next-day delivery rather than shipped. For a physical gift, place the Korean order in mid-January and dispatch before Seollal, which frequently falls just before graduation week and can eat the entire remaining window. If Seollal falls in the first half of February that year, the usable window shrinks to roughly the first three weeks of January, which is much tighter than it sounds.
Buying Korean goods for a US graduation
For a US May or June ceremony, ordering Korean items in late March or early April is comfortable. Popular categories are quality pen sets, leather goods and skincare gift sets in the 60,000 to 200,000 KRW range. This direction of the calendar is easy because it avoids every Korean holiday cluster. Presentation matters more than in the US
Korean retail gift wrapping is a standard, often free service and considerably more elaborate than the US equivalent. Requesting store gift wrapping at purchase is worth doing, though delicate wrapping does not always survive international transit, so ask for the wrapped item to be boxed with padding rather than shipped loose.
