Buying Model Kits and Plamodel From Korea

Hobby & Collectibles

Korea has a large model kit hobby with dedicated shops, domestic distributors and a competitive online market. For overseas builders the appeal is pricing on mainstream kits and access to Korea-exclusive distributor runs and event kits.

Pricing versus US retail

Mainstream grade kits run 15,000-45,000 KRW in Korea, roughly $11-34, against $25-60 at US hobby retail for the same kit. Larger and higher-grade kits at 80,000-250,000 KRW show similar gaps. The saving is real but shipping bulk is the counterweight.

The box volume problem

Model kit boxes are mostly air. A medium kit box measures around 30 by 19 by 8 cm and weighs 400-700 g, but three of them stacked bill as far more volumetric weight than their actual mass. Removing the outer box and shipping the sprues in their sealed bags with the instructions cuts volume by half or more.

When to keep the box

Collectors who want the box intact should say so and accept the volumetric cost. For builders who are going to cut the sprues apart anyway, box removal is the single biggest cost saving available in this category.

Korea-exclusive items

Domestic distributor limited colors, convention kits and shop-exclusive runs appear regularly and do not reach international retail. These are the items where importing is about availability rather than price.

Frequently asked

Does removing the box damage the kit?

No. Sprues stay in their sealed bags and the instruction sheet and decals travel flat. Only collector value in the sealed box is affected.

Are paints and cement shippable?

Solvent-based cements and lacquer paints are restricted on air freight. Buy those locally and import only the kits.

How many kits fit in one shipment?

Debagged, six to eight medium kits fit comfortably under 5 kg. Boxed, the same kits can bill at double that.
