Korean kitchen knives and hand tools are good value and mostly straightforward to import, but the category attracts a lot of confusion because carrier rules, federal import rules and state possession laws are three separate things that people tend to blend together.
Federal import position
Ordinary kitchen and utility knives import without restriction. The federal restrictions target specific mechanisms: automatic opening knives, ballistic knives and certain concealed blade designs. A chef knife, a cleaver or a whittling knife is not in that category. Folding knives with an assisted opening mechanism sit closer to the restricted line than a plain folder, so read the mechanism description carefully.
Carrier packing requirements
Blades must be sheathed or edge-guarded and immobilized so they cannot cut through the box in transit. A knife that punctures its packaging can injure handlers and the shipment gets pulled. Korean sellers ship domestically with minimal protection, so this usually needs adding at the warehouse. Cardboard edge guards taped along the blade plus a rigid inner box is the standard approach and adds under 100 g per knife.
State law is the real variable
Possession rules for automatic and certain fixed blades vary substantially by state and sometimes by city. This affects what you can legally own after it arrives, independently of whether it cleared customs. Check your own state's position before ordering anything with an automatic mechanism. Some states also restrict blade length on carried knives, which is irrelevant to a kitchen knife at home but relevant to anything pocket sized.
What is worth importing
Korean kitchen knives at 30,000-120,000 KRW offer strong value, and traditional Korean cleaver-style blades have no direct US equivalent. Craft and woodworking tools are similarly good value. Expect 200-600 g per knife, so a set of three is a manageable addition to a box. Korean woodworking chisels and gardening tools are similarly good value, though tools are dense and a full set adds weight quickly.
