Korea has its own licensing arrangements for building block sets and jigsaw puzzles, which produces Korea-exclusive sets built around domestic properties, landmarks and characters. The catch is identical to model kits: the boxes are mostly air.
Korea-exclusive sets
Domestic block brands produce sets modeled on Korean landmarks, historical architecture and local characters, priced at 20,000-90,000 KRW. Jigsaw publishers license Korean illustrators and photography that never appear in Western puzzle lines. Neither is available through US retail at any price.
Box volume management
A 1,000-piece puzzle box measures about 38 by 26 by 6 cm and weighs 800 g. Three of them stack reasonably, but the empty headspace in each box is pure freight cost. For puzzles, the box holds the picture reference, so keep it and accept the volume.
Block sets and debagging
Block sets can often ship with the box removed and the numbered bags plus instruction booklet packed tight, cutting volume by half. This destroys collector value on a sealed set but saves substantially if you intend to build it.
Piece count and quality
Korean domestic block brands vary in tolerance and clutch power. Product reviews on Korean retailer pages discuss fit quality directly, and translating a few reviews is worth the two minutes before buying an unfamiliar brand.
