When a Korean site expects more demand than stock, it does not simply open the page and let servers fall over. It uses one of three mechanisms, and each one has different implications for whether an overseas buyer has any chance at all.
The waiting room queue
Popular on ticketing and high-demand product launches. Everyone who loads the page before the open time is placed in a randomized queue at the moment sales begin, then admitted in order. Arriving early gives you a queue slot but not a better position, since ordering is randomized at open. Connection stability matters more than speed. Refreshing during a waiting room usually forfeits your place and puts you at the back, which is the most common self-inflicted failure in this format.
Raffle and draw systems
Common for sneakers and limited collaborations. You enter during a window, a draw is held, and winners get a purchase link valid for a short period, often 24 hours. Entry usually requires a verified Korean account, and winners must complete payment quickly or forfeit, which is the failure point for anyone in a distant time zone. Some raffles also require the entrant to be a member of the brand's Korean app with a purchase history, which excludes new accounts entirely.
Straight timed release
Stock goes live at a fixed time and sells first come first served. This is where automated tools and fast checkout matter, and where being logged in with a saved address and payment method in advance decides the outcome. Korean shoppers prepare the cart beforehand and only confirm at open. Payment method should be preselected too, since adding a card during checkout on a timed release virtually guarantees losing the item.
Time zone arithmetic
Korean release times cluster at 10am, noon and 6pm KST, which fall at 8pm, 10pm and 4am US Eastern the previous day. Working this out before the drop rather than during it is the difference between participating and reading about it afterward. Korean daylight saving does not exist, so the offset from US time zones shifts twice a year on the US side rather than the Korean one.
