Parents' Day in Korea and Sending Gifts From the US

How It Works

Korea combines mothers and fathers into one date, May 8, and the gift conventions are quite specific. For Korean American families sending something to relatives in Korea, or ordering Korean goods for parents in the US, the date drives a genuine ordering deadline in April.

The customs around the date

Carnations are the traditional flower, given as a real bouquet or a decorative pin. Cash in a card remains extremely common and is not considered impersonal. Beyond that, health supplements, cosmetics sets, quality food gift boxes and small appliances are the standard gift categories, generally in the 50,000 to 300,000 KRW range.

Sending to relatives in Korea

Buying from a Korean store and having it delivered domestically inside Korea is dramatically cheaper and faster than shipping from the US. Domestic delivery costs a few thousand won and takes one to two days. The obstacle is placing the order at all without a Korean payment method, which is what a buy-for-me arrangement solves.

Ordering Korean goods for parents in the US

For an arrival before May 8, place Korean store orders by about April 10 and dispatch the consolidated box by April 17. Korea's early May has its own cluster of holidays that slows domestic dispatch, which is the delay people forget to include. Ordering three weeks ahead also leaves room to correct a wrong item, which is impossible inside a two-week window. Aim to have the box dispatched before the last week of April.

Categories that ship well

Ginseng and packaged health supplements, skincare sets, tea, and traditional craft items all travel safely. Fresh food gift sets, which are enormously popular in Korea, generally cannot be shipped to the US at all, so those should be bought inside Korea for domestic delivery instead. Weight is the constraint on ginseng sets in particular, which commonly run 1 to 2 kg boxed and carry a lot of decorative packaging. Ask for repacking unless the presentation box is part of the gift.

Frequently asked

Is May 8 a public holiday in Korea?

It is a recognized day but not a day off work. Businesses operate normally, though delivery volume rises noticeably in the week before.

Can I send flowers to Korea from the US?

Korean domestic florists deliver same-day and it is far better than any international floral service. Ordering domestically inside Korea is the right approach.

What about Korean holidays in early May?

Children's Day on May 5 is a public holiday and often creates a long weekend, which slows courier networks for two to three days. Build that into the timeline.
