The famous ten-step routine is a marketing artifact, not a rule. Most Korean shoppers run four to six steps on a weekday and add two or three on a Sunday. Knowing which steps do real work saves you from buying products that duplicate each other.
The steps that actually matter
Cleanse, hydrate, treat, seal, protect. In Korean product terms that means a cleansing oil or gel, a toner, one active serum, a moisturizer, and sunscreen. Everything else is optional layering. A functional starter set of those five from mid-tier Korean brands runs roughly 55,000-90,000 KRW (about $40-65), which is often less than two department-store products in the US.
Where the extra steps go
Sheet masks, sleeping packs, essences and eye creams sit between the core five. Add them one at a time so you can tell what is working. Korean shoppers usually treat sheet masks as a twice-weekly boost rather than a nightly step, which is why they are sold in 10-packs for 8,000-15,000 KRW.
Sizing your first order
A full five-step set weighs about 900 g to 1.3 kg boxed. That is a small, cheap parcel. Adding a couple of sheet mask packs and a cleansing balm pushes you toward 2 kg, which is still the sweet spot for a first international box.
Buying the set in Korea instead of the US
Only a fraction of Korean SKUs ever reach US shelves, and the ones that do usually carry a 40-70% markup plus a smaller size. Ordering the whole routine from a Korean retailer through a buy-for-me service and shipping it as one box normally beats piecing it together from US listings.

Do I need a toner and an essence?
Not at the start. Pick one hydrating layer and see how your skin behaves for a month. Adding both at once makes it impossible to tell which product caused a change.
How long will a starter set last?
Roughly three to five months for serums and moisturizers, two to three months for cleansers, and six to eight weeks for a sunscreen you apply daily.
Should I buy full sizes or trial kits?
Trial kits are worth it for actives you have never used. Korean brands sell 7-day sample sets for 3,000-8,000 KRW, and they ship at almost no extra weight.
