What each item actually weighs
A dolsot stone bowl runs 1.5-3 kg each. A small onggi fermentation jar starts around 3 kg and mid-size ones reach 8-12 kg. A traditional brass or stainless serving set runs 2-4 kg. Cast iron gopdol grill plates are 2-5 kg. These are not marginal additions to a box, they define the box. Brass tableware in particular is denser than it appears, and a complete set for four can reach 5 kg before any packaging is added.
When it still makes sense
Dolsot bowls and gopdol plates are genuinely hard to source in the US outside Korean grocery districts, and the Korean price of 15,000-35,000 KRW is a third of US specialty retail. For two or three bowls the freight is tolerable. For a full onggi it usually is not, and sea freight becomes the only sensible route. Smaller stone bowls in the 15-18 cm range are the practical sweet spot, giving you the cooking properties without the weight of the larger sizes.
Fragility despite the weight
Onggi is fired earthenware and cracks on impact despite its mass. Stone bowls chip. These need the same packing discipline as ceramics plus a stronger outer carton rated for the weight, since a 10 kg item in a light box will burst the box seams. Double boxing is standard practice for these items, and the outer carton itself can add 500-800 g which counts toward your billable weight.
The sea freight alternative
For anything over roughly 15 kg, ocean shipping cuts the per-kilo cost dramatically. The trade is five to eight weeks of transit, a port handling step, and usually a minimum consignment size that only makes sense if you are ordering a full household of goods at once. Sea freight also requires the goods to sit in a Korean warehouse until a consolidation is ready, which adds further time before the clock even starts.
