The interesting Korean alcohol is not the green bottle soju sold in every US Korean market. It is the craft segment, hundreds of small breweries and distilleries producing single-batch makgeolli, aged soju and traditional yakju that export in tiny volumes if at all.
The categories that matter
Makgeolli, unfiltered rice brew, typically 6-8% ABV and sold fresh in 750 ml bottles for 3,000-15,000 KRW. Yakju and cheongju, clarified rice wines at 12-16%. Traditional distilled soju at 25-45%, made from grain rather than industrial ethanol, priced 20,000-90,000 KRW. Fruit wines and infusions round it out. Korean craft breweries number in the hundreds, and regional competitions have raised quality noticeably over the past decade across every category.
Why craft makgeolli cannot travel
Live makgeolli continues fermenting and needs refrigeration with a shelf life of ten to thirty days. Pasteurized versions keep for months but taste flatter. The bottles that Korean drinkers rate highly are almost all live, which puts them structurally out of reach for international shipping. Pasteurized makgeolli in aseptic packaging does exist and travels, and it is the version sold in US Korean groceries, which explains the quality gap people notice.
The distilled segment is the exception
Aged traditional soju is shelf stable and travel tolerant, and small distilleries produce genuinely distinctive spirits at prices well below comparable Japanese shochu. This is the category worth pursuing, subject entirely to whether you can legally receive it. Bottles are typically 375 or 500 ml at 700-1,200 g each, which is heavy but not prohibitive relative to their value if importing were possible.
Where Koreans actually buy
Specialty traditional liquor shops in Seoul, brewery direct sales, and a handful of online traditional-liquor platforms which are the only alcohol category Korean law permits to be sold online domestically. General e-commerce sites cannot sell alcohol at all. Those platforms are also the only place many small distilleries sell at all, which is why the category is invisible on ordinary Korean shopping sites.
