Service members and families stationed abroad, including in Korea itself, have access to military mail that is often cheaper than commercial international shipping. The constraint is that most commercial carriers cannot deliver to those addresses at all, which changes how the shipment has to be arranged.
Who can deliver and who cannot
APO, FPO and DPO addresses are served through the US postal system, not by commercial express carriers. A shipment booked with a private express carrier generally cannot be delivered to one of these addresses and will either be refused or rerouted at cost. The workable route is postal service, which means the shipment has to be booked that way from the start.
Address format matters more than usual
The address must be written in the military format with the unit and box number, the APO or FPO designator, the two-letter code and the ZIP, with no country name for the host nation. Adding the host country is one of the most common reasons a package gets misrouted into an expensive international channel instead of the military mail system.
Size, weight and restrictions
Postal military mail has weight and dimension limits well below what commercial air freight accepts, commonly around 70 pounds and with girth restrictions. Certain items are restricted by destination, including some electronics, aerosols and anything the host nation restricts. A customs form is required and must be filled out accurately for every package.
Transit expectations
Delivery to an APO or FPO typically runs longer than commercial express, often ten days to three weeks depending on the destination, and tracking visibility often ends once the package enters the military mail network. That gap in tracking is normal and not evidence of a lost package, though it makes people nervous the first time.

Can I order from Korean stores directly to an APO address?
Most Korean stores will not recognize the format and their systems often reject it. Shipping to a Korean address and then forwarding through a postal service is the common workaround.
