Your Package Was Returned to Sender: What Now

Shipping & Costs

A return to sender on an international shipment is one of the more expensive outcomes available, because you have paid to fly a box in one direction and are being asked to pay again to fly it back. Understanding the causes is worth more than understanding the remedies.

Why returns happen

Failed delivery after repeated attempts, an invalid or incomplete address, refusal of a duty payment by the recipient, an unclaimed package sitting past the holding period, and customs refusal of a prohibited item. Unclaimed packages are the largest category and are almost entirely preventable by watching tracking after the first delivery attempt.

What recovery costs

Return freight is generally charged at the same or higher rate as the outbound leg, plus any storage that accrued. On a 5 kg box that can be 50 to 70 USD to bring it back to Korea, and then the same again to send it out a second time. Total cost of a failed delivery is frequently more than the goods are worth, which is why abandonment is sometimes rational.

Deciding whether to recover

Compare the total re-shipping cost against replacement cost. For 200 USD of unrepeatable limited-edition goods, paying 120 USD to recover is obviously right. For 90 USD of albums you could reorder, it is not. Make the call quickly, because storage charges accrue while you think about it. Storage charges commonly begin after three to seven free days and run a few dollars a day, which turns a slow decision into a more expensive one.

Preventing it

Track actively for the four days after an estimated delivery date rather than assuming arrival. Make sure duty is prepaid so nobody is asked for money at the door. Confirm the unit number. And if you will be away, arrange a hold or a pickup location before the box lands rather than after the first failed attempt.

Frequently asked

Can I stop a return once it starts?

Sometimes, within the first day or two, by contacting the carrier immediately with the tracking number. Once the box is in the return stream it is rarely reversible.

Do I get my shipping cost refunded?

No. Freight is charged for carriage performed, and a returned shipment consumed the outbound service regardless of the outcome.

What happens if I abandon it?

The goods are typically disposed of or sold after a holding period, and any accrued charges may still be billed. Formally telling the carrier you are abandoning is better than simply not responding.
