Volumetric Weight Explained (Why Your Light Box Costs More)

Shipping & Costs

Air cargo sells space, not just mass. A box of chips weighs almost nothing but occupies the same hold volume as something far heavier, so carriers bill on whichever is greater.

The formula

Length x width x height in centimeters divided by 6000 gives volumetric weight in kilograms. You are billed on the greater of actual and volumetric weight.

What triggers it

Puffed snacks, pillows, plush toys, empty-space retail packaging and anything shipped in an oversized box.

How to reduce it

Compact packing, removing unnecessary void fill, and combining bulky items with dense ones so the box fills efficiently.

When it does not apply

Dense goods like books, skincare and canned items are almost always billed on actual weight.
