Products containing active pharmaceutical ingredients regulated as drugs in the US, anything requiring a prescription in either country, and any product whose labeling claims to treat a disease face refusal. Unapproved new drugs cannot legally be imported even for personal use, though small personal quantities of clearly non-hazardous items are often not pursued. Personal quantities of clearly benign topical products are the practical safe zone, and anything oral deserves a closer look at the active ingredient list.
Prohibited outright
Prescription pharmaceuticals without a valid US prescription and accompanying documentation. Products containing controlled substances, including some cold medicines with ingredients scheduled in the US. Anything sold in Korea as a functional drug with claims the FDA has not evaluated. Korean packaging also lists actives in Korean only on many products, so translating the ingredient panel before ordering is a necessary step.
Documentation that helps
For a legitimate personal medical need, carrying a copy of your prescription and a doctor's letter supports the case for personal importation. This applies far more to travel with medication than to mail shipments, which are held to a stricter standard. Anything you actually depend on medically should be sourced through a US prescription rather than an import, since a seizure leaves you without it.
