Fashion clearance starts in late December and reaches its lowest prices in mid to late January. Beauty runs new-year promotions in early January that are more about bundles and gift sets than price cuts. Dated goods, meaning planners, calendars and season sets, collapse in value in the first two weeks of January and are close to worthless by March.
Where the real savings are
Winter outerwear at 40 to 60 percent off is the standout, though it is also the heaviest thing you can ship. A padded coat runs 1.2 to 2 kg, meaning 22 to 40 USD of air freight, so a discount has to be substantial to be worth it. Knitwear, accessories and footwear offer a better weight-to-savings ratio.
Shipping into the worst window
January clearance runs straight into Seollal in most years. Goods bought at the deepest discounts often sit through the holiday shutdown, arriving in mid-February. If the item is seasonal winter apparel, that means wearing it for a few weeks at best in most of the US. The same applies to dated goods: a planner bought at 50 percent off in late January arrives in mid-February with six weeks of its year already gone.
The strategy that works
Buy clearance in the first ten days of January and dispatch before the holiday, or treat late January purchases as next-season buying and accept February arrival. The second approach is actually the smarter one for outerwear, since you are buying a year ahead at the lowest price of the cycle. Sizing is also better in early January than in late January, since clearance stock thins to the extremes as the period runs on. Buying early at 40 percent off in your size beats buying late at 60 percent off in the wrong one.
