The cheapest possible pattern is one enormous annual shipment, and almost nobody should do that. Frequency is a tradeoff between freight efficiency and every other kind of risk, and the sensible answer for most buyers sits in the middle rather than at either end.
The freight math favors size, up to a point
Per-kilogram air rates drop as weight rises, steeply up to about 10 kg and then gently. A 2 kg box might cost 13 USD per kilogram; a 10 kg box perhaps 9; a 25 kg box maybe 7.50. Going from twelve monthly 2 kg boxes to four quarterly 6 kg boxes saves roughly 30 to 40 percent of annual freight. Going from four to one saves maybe another 10.
What large infrequent shipments cost you
Everything sits in storage, incurring fees beyond the free window. All your risk concentrates in one box, so a single loss is catastrophic rather than annoying. Items bought in January arrive in December, by which point seasonal apparel is out of season and dated goods are worthless. And a single customs issue delays everything at once.
What frequent small shipments cost you
Freight, obviously, but also handling. Twelve shipments means twelve dispatch decisions, twelve tracking cycles and twelve chances for a delivery problem. The administrative overhead is real even when the money is not large. Each shipment also carries its own risk of a delivery problem, a customs question or a damaged box, so twelve shipments is twelve chances for a bad week rather than one. The freight difference between monthly and quarterly is roughly 30 percent of annual shipping spend, which for most buyers is 60 to 150 USD.
The pattern most people settle on
Four to six shipments a year, each 4 to 8 kg, timed around when purchases naturally cluster: comebacks, seasonal sales and holidays. This captures most of the freight efficiency, keeps storage inside free windows, limits the damage from any single loss, and means nothing waits more than about ten weeks. It also matches how purchases actually arise, which means less time spent deciding whether to ship now or wait.

How long can items be stored for free?
Commonly 30 to 60 days, after which a daily or weekly fee applies per package. Storage fees are what quietly make the annual-shipment strategy uneconomic.
Does one big shipment attract more customs attention?
A high-value shipment is more likely to be examined and more likely to incur duty, and quantities that look commercial change how it is treated. That is a real argument against the single-annual-box approach.
What if I only buy a few things a year?
