Why repacking saves so much
Air freight bills the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, which is calculated from the box dimensions. Retail packaging is designed for shelf presence, not density, so a box of five separately boxed items is mostly air. Consolidating contents into one snug carton commonly cuts billable weight by 25 to 40 percent on bulky goods such as cosmetics sets, shoes and small appliances.
What repacking costs you
Retail packaging carries real resale value for collectibles: sealed albums, limited-edition boxes, sneakers in their original box, and anything a future buyer would expect to receive complete. A sneaker without its box loses roughly 10 to 20 percent of resale value. For those items, the freight saving is smaller than the value destroyed.
The middle option
Keep the retail box but discard the outer shipping carton it arrived in, and pack the retail boxes tightly together with proper cushioning in one larger carton. This captures most of the volumetric saving while preserving everything a collector cares about. It is what most people actually want and rarely what they explicitly ask for.
Items where repacking is a bad idea
Anything glass or ceramic, where the manufacturer's molded packaging is doing structural work. Anything with a hologram or seal that proves authenticity. Electronics with fitted foam. For these, request that the original protective packaging stay intact and accept the volumetric cost. Perfume and pressurized items should also stay in their original packaging, since it is designed to meet the handling rules for those categories. Photograph anything valuable before it is repacked so its condition is documented either way.

Does repacking void a warranty?
Not by itself, though a missing box and documentation can complicate a warranty claim on electronics. Keep manuals and warranty cards even when discarding cartons.
How much does volumetric weight typically add?
For densely packed goods, nothing. For bulky retail packaging, commonly 20 to 50 percent above actual weight, and occasionally more for very light bulky items such as wigs or plush toys.
