Wrong-item errors are more common in Korean ordering than people expect, mostly because option selectors on Korean product pages are dense and easy to misread, and because sellers occasionally substitute. The response depends entirely on where the package currently is, and the leverage disappears once it leaves Korea.
Catch it before it flies
The moment a shipment is verified at a Korean warehouse is when a wrong item is cheap to fix. Domestic return and exchange inside Korea costs a few thousand won and takes three to five days. The same correction after international shipping means paying 25 to 40 USD to send the item back plus waiting weeks, which usually exceeds the item value.
Establish whose error it is
Compare the order confirmation against the product page and the option you selected. Korean option selectors often list colour, size and version in a single dropdown with similar names, and misselection is the most common cause. If the confirmation shows what you intended and the item does not match, it is the seller's error and they bear the return cost. If the confirmation shows the wrong option, it is yours.
How Korean sellers handle it
Reputable Korean sellers resolve genuine errors quickly, usually by arranging a domestic courier pickup and reshipping within a few days. Marketplace sellers go through the platform's dispute process, which is effective but conducted in Korean and on a clock, typically requiring the claim to be raised within seven days of delivery. Independent brand stores are generally slower but more flexible, and often resolve by reshipping the correct item without asking for the wrong one back on low-value goods.
When it is already in the US
At that point the realistic options are keeping it, reselling it domestically, or absorbing an international return cost. For low-value items keeping and reselling is almost always the better answer. For a high-value error, ask the seller to cover return shipping before sending anything, because an unauthorised return frequently arrives and is refused.

How long do I have to report a wrong item?
Korean marketplace dispute windows are typically about seven days from delivery within Korea. If the item has been forwarded, that clock started when it reached the Korean address, not when it reached you.
Can I ask for a partial refund instead?
Often the most practical outcome for a minor discrepancy, and Korean sellers do offer it. It avoids return shipping entirely and is worth proposing before starting a full return.
What if the seller stops responding?
Marketplace platforms have escalation processes that work reasonably well domestically. For independent store purchases the leverage is limited, which is an argument for using established retailers on higher-value orders.
