How fan projects are organized
A fan account announces a design, opens a Korean order form with a deadline, collects payment by domestic bank transfer, produces the run, then ships. Typical order windows are one to two weeks and typical prices are 5,000-20,000 KRW per item. There is no store, no refund policy and no customer service. Deadlines are firm because the organizer commits to a print quantity, and joining late is genuinely impossible rather than a matter of asking nicely.
Why quality is often better
Fan producers choose materials for collectors rather than for margin: thicker card stock, better lamination, acrylic instead of plastic. A fan-made photocard binder frequently outperforms the official equivalent at half the price. Acrylic stands and photocard binders in particular are produced at specifications the official merchandise lines rarely match, which is why they circulate so widely. Print quantities are small enough that a fan producer can afford specifications a licensee cannot.
The payment problem
Almost every fan project takes payment only by Korean bank transfer to a personal account, and many order forms require a Korean phone number for the confirmation step. There is no card option. This is the single hardest barrier and the reason these goods rarely reach international fans directly. Some organizers accept payment through Korean escrow platforms, and those are worth prioritizing since they give a participant at least some recourse.
Risk and etiquette
Most organizers are honest but there is zero recourse if one is not. Check the account history, whether they have completed previous projects, and whether other fans vouch publicly. Never join a project from a brand new account with no history. Shipping is usually a flat domestic rate added at the form stage, and international shipping if offered at all is expensive because organizers ship individually.
